Important Tips on Staying Safe While Serving Process

Serving process can be risky, but seasoned process servers know how to reduce the risk with some common sense safety measures. Certain cases necessitate even more vigilance to safety, especially if violent people or high-crime areas are involved. Follow these tips to stay safe while serving process here in Orlando:

Always Come Prepared

Proper preparation is proof of a great process server. You should never step out of the office door without first researching as much as possible about the individual you are serving. You can find lots of information on the web, especially through social media, about most people. You should always collect at least the following information:

  • Names, aliases, and nicknames
  • Photographs
  • Home, work, and other frequented addresses
  • Phone numbers
  • Social media profiles
  • Known hangouts
  • Pending charges and court dates
  • Background and criminal history

There’s no such thing as too much information, so find out as much as you can during this initial research phase. This allows you to choose the safest place to serve process and avoid potentially dangerous encounters.

Keep Calm

It’s not uncommon for the person you are serving to mirror your own energy, so it’s important to always approach people with a calm and relaxed demeanor. You want to avoid any behavior that could incite a violent response. Keep your body language lax and your tone of voice friendly when attempting to identify individuals to be served. Avoid behaviors such as clenching your fists, putting your hands on your hips, pointing your fingers, or crossing your arms. Speak clearly and concisely, and never use threats to get compliance.

Unfortunately, some individuals will respond with hostility no matter how calm you are. In these cases, step away without turning your back, clearly state the purpose of your visit, leave the process, and exit quickly.

Timing is Everything

Just like so many things in life, when it comes to service of process, timing is everything. Process servers who consistently succeed in locating intended recipients do so by knowing exactly when to attempt service.

For example, if the person you are serving has an upcoming court date, attempt service there. This is an especially good tactic for individuals who are at risk of being violent, as they will be less likely to act out while surrounded by police officers and court officials.
